- sharecropper
- Sharecroppers farmed a section of land for the owners. They received everything they needed (and often less) from the owner. At the end of the season, they turned in their crop and received credit for it. Seldom was the credit enough to cover expenses for the coming year; so the sharecropper was always in debt to the owner. I remain in debt to God for every year that I continue in this life that God has given me. And, I am thankful for it.

Yeah, that's John Cale. I have him singing it, audio, as he sang it on the Leonard Cohen Tribute Album I'M A FAN. Not my favorite rendition - but that's why Baskin-Robbins has 31 flavors! I love Rufus's version, kd lang's version, and Jeff Buckley's version. I don't like Bono's version or Cohen's own version. I now have 90 distinct songs in my Leonard Cohen songs folder & all but a dozen of them are covers, although I have more Leonard Cohen songs performed by Leonard Cohen in other folders. Of course there's an entire Judy Collins Cohen album, an entire Jennifer Warnes Cohen album and two different tribute albums.
